Stave Breakthrough™ Method

Key Signatures.

Stave Breakthrough™ has a unique method for key signatures.

Instead of saying, for example, a piece of music is written in the key of E.

key E

SB students are encouraged to name the numbers of sharps or flats in a key signature before naming the key. To understand this and become more proficient with key signatures a confident grasp of scales should already be established.

Repeat the process to include sharps or flats.

Dynamics are brought into play by adjusting the volume the students read aloud in the Stave Breakthrough method.

f loudff very loud

Stave Breakthrough adapts to focus on the number of beats in each bar to confirm the time signature.

Stave Breakthrough worksheets help understand time signatures. Students still read aloud in the Stave Breakthrough manner, 1 beat G, 1 beat F, 2 Beat E etc. but on the worksheet only the value of the beat is written in the boxes provided.

Below is the first line of a printable SBHelper worksheet designed by me for one of my young students.

Pranya (7) loves these SBHelpers, my young student still calls out 1 beat G, 1 beat F, 2 Beat E but in the boxes she writes only the length of time for each note. Underneath the stave Pranya turns it into a sum. This, of course can be done with any piece of music, in the example below every bar contains notes with a value adding up to four beats.

If a student can't write on the music mental arithmetic takes over. Stave Breakthrough works with all time signatures helping to understand what they mean. When the student begins to sing or play a piece the teacher will emphasise how the pulse of each song must be adhered to carefully.

Note to teachers. Pick up a piece of music and read it out loud in the Stave Breakthrough manner it's much easier to understand it that way.

"2 beat G, 3 beat A."
