What is a Mode?

Modes are scales within scales, they are the most important tool a musician

can use when wanting to improvise.

The seven modes provide seven chords. These chords are natural to the

scale. They are essential for songwriting, sight reading a chord sequence,

playing in recording studios and enjoying yourself at home.

At this point a scale becomes a key. Modes are music's gift to creativity.

To play and understand modes and use them, you must learn where they

come from.

In the full version of the Modes and Chords section of the Music Reader's

Toolbox I demonstrate how modes make reading music easier.
